Balancing Family and Education

My journey began while I was pursuing a part-time degree in business and raising my young son, Aaron.

Juggling my responsibilities as a mother and a student wasn’t easy, but I was determined to make the most of my educational opportunities. In fact, returning to education at an older age really suited me.

I struggled a bit in school but once I went back to get my degree I was able to find different ways to learn. Ways that worked for me. I got a 1st class honor in my Business Degree and was a little shocked, to be honest.

Identifying a Niche Market

During my studies, we noticed a gap in the market for small businesses that were struggling to understand and leverage social media effectively.

I was inspired to create a solution to address this need and help these businesses succeed in the digital world. So one Saturday evening while my son was at a birthday party I sat with John and mapped out what this business would look like.


Armed with my newfound passion, I founded my company and embarked on the never-ending journey of learning about social media. The main focus was to provide small business owners with the support they needed to achieve success online.

We provided social media management, content creation, SEO (search engine optimization), lead generation, social ads, and of course social media consultancy services.

Furthering My Education

While completing my degree, I also enrolled in online courses to deepen my knowledge of social media. One of the most transformative experiences was taking the Meta Blueprint course, which equipped me with valuable insights and strategies to better serve my clients.

The social media management services I offered at that time included online customer engagement and this really helped to understand the platforms fully.

Gaining Certifications and Recognition

As my expertise grew, I obtained various certifications from Meta, including the prestigious Lead Trainer Certificate.

These certifications not only validated my skills but also provided credibility and recognition in the industry.

Transitioning from Freelance to Employee: Embracing New Opportunities with feedalpha

My journey as a social media consultant took an unexpected turn when I began working with feedalpha, a platform I had been working with as a freelancer for some time. The opportunity to be more deeply involved in the growth and development of the tool, from its design and features to expanding its user base, was too good to pass up.

Although I had previously said I would never work for anyone again after experiencing the freedom of self-employment, the team at feedalpha presented an offer that was simply too good to ignore. Also, I didn’t have to do boring invoices or VAT returns anymore!

The first step towards creating a winning strategy is knowing who your audience is. As a social media consultant, I work closely with clients to understand their target demographic, their preferences, and their online behavior.

This enables me to craft targeted messages and content that resonates with the audience and drives engagement. Often I have people who love their product or service, as they should, and believe that everyone will want to buy it! Even if that is the case and what you want to sell is the most desired product in the world you can’t reach everyone at once!

Well, you can with the right budget and viral content but do you have any idea how hard it is to get content to go viral? The moon needs to be in retrograde and Venus needs to be in the shadow of a death star. So start with mapping out your audience. If the products are for everyone you will also need to have these audiences mapped out so you can serve them the right content in the right way.

Choose the Right Platforms

It’s essential for clients to choose social media platforms that not only cater to their audience but also align with their own preferences and abilities. As a consultant, I help clients identify which platforms are best suited for their brand and provide guidance on how to effectively use these platforms for the best results. Once they have got their heads around these platforms we look at introducing them to others. I find when you do too many platforms on your own at once you can become overwhelmed!

Monitor Competitors, But Don’t Compare

Competitive analysis is a crucial part of any social media strategy. However, it’s important not to get caught up in direct comparisons, as it’s impossible to know their budget or how well their content actually converts. Instead, use competitor insights to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement. This will enable your brand to stay ahead of the curve and focus on what truly matters – your own unique offering.

Stay True to Your Brand

In a world full of noise and distractions, staying true to your brand is more important than ever. Consistent brand identity and authentic messaging will help your brand stand out and connect with your target audience. You want your social media presence to be a reflection of you and your values. So be sure they are your values and not what you think others want to see.

Don’t change your brand every month on Canva. Keep the font consistent. I say all this and if you look at my own Instagram it might appear I don’t live by my own rules. Change can be good and refreshing but limit it to big changes or launches in your brand.

Engage with Your Audience Regularly

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a social media consultant is helping clients build genuine connections with their audience. Encourage your clients to engage with their followers regularly, by responding to comments, sharing user-generated content, and hosting events like Q&A sessions or live streams. This will build a sense of community and also provide valuable insights into your audience’s needs.
